CMC is non-ionic cellulose made from natural cotton fiber under series of chemical processing. It's odorless, tasteless and non-toxic white powder, can be dissolved in cold water to form a transparent viscous solution with the properties of thickening, binding, dispersing, emulsifying, film coating, suspending, absorbing, gelling, water retention and colloid protection.

The mud containing PAC can make the well wall form a thin and firm filter cake with low permeability, which reduces the water loss.
After adding CMC to the mud, the drilling rig can get a low initial cutting force, so that the mud is easy to release the gas wrapped in it, and the debris is quickly discarded in the mud pit.
Drilling mud, like other suspended dispersions, has a certain life span. The addition of CMC can make it stable and prolong the life span.
Mud containing CMC is seldom affected by mold, therefore, there is no need to maintain a high pH value and no need to use preservatives.

The CMC-containing mud has good stability and can reduce water loss even if the temperature is above 150℃. CMC with high viscosity and high degree of substitution is suitable for mud with low density, and CMC with low viscosity and high degree of substitution is suitable for mud with high density. The selection of CMC should be determined according to different conditions such as mud type, region, and well depth.

PAC Polyanionic Cellulose
PAC Polyanionic Cellulose polymer of high purity and used as a main fluid-loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids.
Polyanionic cellulose (PAC) is a widely used drilling fluid additive. It has a similar molecular structure to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). However, it is considered better than CMC in terms of filtration reduction, anti-salt, anti-collapse, and high-temperature resistance. It can be used at temperatures up to 150°C.
PAC is considered a premium product because it typically has a higher degree of carboxymethyl substitution and can contain less residual Sodium Chloride.
There are to main versions of PAC available – PAC HV (Polyanionic cellulose High Viscosity) and PAC LV (Polyanionic cellulose Low Viscosity)
PAC polyanionic cellulose is added to drilling fluids and other mixtures of chemicals to aid in several actions, including the cool down and lubrication of the mud bit, suspension of formation cuttings, and aid transportation of the surface, and management formation pressure throughout the oil well.
Adding PAC can prevent any dangerous situations such as well blockages or bore collapses during the production process by making the drilling fluid stiffer. Its low water loss properties can reduce the amount of water needed to go into the productive zone.
PAC is used to adjust the mud’s viscosity levels, and it can be used as part of a mixture to change the PH levels.
